Adding or editing a page or post to your custom WordPress website is an easy process. Once logged into your WordPress account you’ll be able to add or update a page or post. Let’s start with the most commonly edited area in a WordPress website.

WordPress Pages

What is a page?

WordPress pages are the meat of your website. When customers search Google or Bing and click a link containing your web address this is where they will be taken to. You want to make pages with useful information so that the customer can read through to find out more about what it is you offer. Usually standard pages include (but are not limited to) Home, About, Products, Contact Us.

How do I add or edit a page?

  1. With a Custom IQComputing Theme, you will be automatically directed to Pages when you log in. If you are not on an IQComputing Theme: begin at the ‘Dashboard’, click ‘Pages’ in the left hand navigation. This page will list all your current pages where you’ll be able to add, edit, or remove any of them.
  2. Click the ‘Add New’ at the very top of the page or in the left navigation drop down menu to add a page.
  3. On this page you’ll be presented with two text boxes. The small box at the top is the title to your page and the box on bottom will be where you enter your page content. Although the title box will only contain text, the larger content box enables you to add images, text, video, audio, playlists, and most documents.
  4. If your new page is a sub page (i.e. ‘Website Design’ under the main page ‘Services’), you’ll need to select a ‘Parent’ page in the right column.
  5. Once your title and content have been added, you’ll want to click the Preview Changes button in the right column inside the “Publish” box.
  6. If you’re happy with the page preview then you can click “Publish” or “Update” on the right side. This will push your page live to your website and you can now link it anywhere.

Please note that if a sub page has a ‘Parent’ page selected, the new page will automatically be added to any existing drop down navigation or left navigation that is on the website. If you do not have a drop menu or sub page left navigation on your website, please contact our team as we will need to provide a website update estimate to add this functionality.

If you are wanting to add a main page to your website please contact us beforehand as there may be design restrictions to your current layout (i.e. not enough space in the navigation).

WordPress Posts

What is a post?

A WordPress post is most commonly seen as a “Blog” or “News” section of a website. You will have the same functionality as pages since you can add images, text, video, etc. but you cannot add parents or children. Instead you can create multiple folders or Categories to put your posts into. You also have the option to archive and sort your posts based on the date it was posted which becomes useful for events or news articles.

How do I add or edit a post?

  1. Click ‘Posts’ in the left hand navigation. This landing page will show you all of the current posts (whether it being blog posts, events, news, announcements, etc.) in which you’ll have the ability to add, edit, or remove.
  2. Click the ‘Add New’ at the very top of the page or in the left navigation drop down menu to add a post.
  3. On this page you’ll be presented with two text boxes. The small box at the top is the title to your post and the box on bottom will be where you enter your post content. Although the title box will only contain text, the larger content box enables you to add images, text, video, audio, playlists, and most documents.
  4. In the right column under ‘Post Categories’ you’ll need to select one or more categories (i.e. news, announcements, etc.) to organize your post. Under the category list you’ll see a link to add new post categories.
  5. Once your title and content have been added, you’ll want to click the Preview Changes button in the right column inside the “Publish” box.
  6. If you’re happy with the post preview then you can click “Publish” or “Update” on the right side. This will push your post live to your website and you can now link it anywhere.

If your website currently features the newest post(s) on your homepage (or on another section of your website), the newly added post will automatically update this section by the date the post was published.
