For both corporate and consumer users of the Microsoft Windows 8 operating system, a big complaint that we often receive is the extra step that is involved with using the start screen interface.  Microsoft’s Windows 8.1 now allows you to boot straight to the desktop.

To enable boot to desktop (assuming you have the free Windows 8.1 update or later installed):

  • Right-click on the desktop task bar
  • Choose Properties, then open the Navigation tab
  • Under the Start screen heading add a check to the top option ‘When I sign in or close all applications on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start’
  • Click Apply to save your changes
